With Valentine’s Day only a few days away, and ads for flowers, stuffed animals and heart-shaped chocolates taking over the world, we figured we’d also take the opportunity to discuss the big L-word! Sure, there are many different types of LOVE out there, and they’re all equally as beautiful in our book. We do, however, believe that there is one love that trumps them all, and that love is Self-Love!
What is Self-Love?
There isn’t one standard definition, and Self-Love can mean something different to each individual person, but in short, Self-Love is about taking time to care for yourself. It is about showing regard for your personal well-being and happiness, and giving yourself whatever it is you need to live well!
Let’s face it, life can be so busy, and many of us spend a great deal of time caring for other people – friends, colleagues, spouses, children, parents etc. And unfortunately, a lot of the time, when things get extra hectic at home/work/school it is our Self-Love and Self-Care that generally takes the backburner.
Why is Self-Love so Important?
There are so many reasons why practising Self-Love on the regular is absolutely crucial. In fact, there are many studies which prove that regularly practicing Self-Love can greatly improve your overall quality of life, and who doesn’t want that? That in mind, we should all think twice before skipping the gym to catch up on housework, working through lunch because we’re ‘too busy’ to take a break, or cancelling a dinner date with a friend because there are heaps of laundry waiting for us at home.
Maybe you already practice Self-Love regularly, and if so, good for you! If you don’t as often as you should, well then, there has never been a better time to start. Whether it is reading a book, having a warm bath, taking a nap, having some pizza, a glass of wine, going to the gym, taking a walk, going to yoga, watching Netflix, meeting up with an old friend, snuggling up with a glass of tea or simply taking a deep breath – whatever it is you enjoy – do it! This Valentine’s Day and every day, be sure to show yourself some serious Self-Love! After all, you totally deserve it!
We asked our Team how they generally practise Self-Love and included their comments below. Feel free to take a page out of their books or comment your favourite Self-Love activities below…
“I think one of the most amazing things you can do for yourself is to intentionally slow down. Life can be so busy at times we forget to stop and smell the proverbial roses. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being ‘busy,’ in fact, most of us thrive under those circumstances. However, it is so important to stop and take in our surroundings – life is so beautiful after all. One thing I like to do at least once a day is to make it a point to be mindful of myself and my surroundings. In this minute I try to be aware of all my senses, take a long, deep breath, and experience all that moment has to offer.”
“I’m so glad we’re talking about Self-Love this Valentine’s day! I really do believe that happiness doesn’t exist without cultivating Self-Love first. I feel (and I’m sure many of you would agree) it’s not easy to juggle family, friends, work and maintain a household. But it’s so important to rest by reminding ourselves to slow down and put ourselves first once in a while. You can’t take care of everything if you don’t take care of yourself first. So, what do I do for me? I didn’t realize it until a day off this past summer; my husband asked – ‘You’re doing yard work on your only day off?’ I responded with an innate ‘Yes! That’s exactly what I’m going to do!’. It is not uncommon to find me trimming shrubs, pruning flowers, and pulling weeds with my almost-two-year-old daughter alongside me yelling ‘Weeeeeeeds!!!’ (haha). It’s relaxing and therapeutic, and there is nothing sweeter than witnessing the world through her eyes!”
“After a busy day at work, being a Mommy-taxi, making countless meals and cleaning up endless toys, I wind down every night with some Essential Oils. Our favourite nighttime diffuser blend is:
– 2 drops of lavender
– 2 drops of frankincense
– 2 drops of Roman chamomile
Not only does this blend help calm the soul, but it really has a way of prepping us (adults and kids alike) for a good night’s sleep! And let me tell you – a good night’s sleep can make all the difference!”
“My favourite way to participate in Self-Love is by taking some “me time” and making a delicious home-cooked meal! I usually like to cook up some yummy comfort food, like garlicky Shepard’s Pie, loaded with a ton of fresh veggies! Not only does it fuel my body, but it also gives me a sense of great accomplishment. Not to mention all the delicious leftovers for lunches throughout the week! Eating right, spending time creating delicious meals, and then enjoying the fruits of your labour with family and friends – you really can’t beat that!”
“Being a new Mom has taught me a lot about the importance of Self-Love, and my definition of Self-Love has dramatically shifted over the course of this past year. I realized early on that in order to be the best possible wife and Mother I need to ensure that I make time for myself and my needs. So, in between ‘Momming’, I make sure I steal some time for me, whether it’s having a warm Epsom salt bath, curling up with a good book, or simply just enjoying some nice quiet time!”
