So maybe you haven’t had much luck with houseplants in the past, but you have that perfect corner in your home that could use a pop of green! We would like to introduce you to Zamioculcas zamiifolia, better known as the ZZ Plant! This modern houseplant is one of the toughest around, so if you have a busy household, live in a dorm room, aren’t home often due to travel or work, or tend to forget about your plants in general- we’ve found your new leafy best friend!

Recognized by their shiny, dark green leaves, and sturdy stems- ZZ Plants are known to be plants of steel due to their evolution in harsh native conditions in Eastern Africa where rainfall is scarce. ZZ Plants are tolerant to a wide range of conditions and can survive in just about any location in your home or office – not requiring natural light; they thrive indoors under fluorescent lighting.

When it comes to watering your ZZ Plant, you can get away with every other week or so, as they retain and store their water and nutrients in their roots. You will know it is time to water when the top inch or two of the soil is dry. When watering, ensure that you are thorough and allow the water to drain out of the bottom of the pot, never let it sit in water as rotting will likely result. If you notice that your ZZ plant begins to drop its leaves, this is because it has entered a stage of self-preservation due to non-watering. This is its way of conserving any remaining moisture – so be sure to water your plant and it will likely regenerate its health.

Be ahead of the trend with this super easy to grow, air purifying houseplant – happiest when left alone, ZZ’s require infrequent watering and attention. Sounds like the perfect houseplant for every home!
